Winter in Perth: It's actually pretty good

Hanging around Perth for the Winter Break? Don’t despair – there’s still plenty to do once you’ve binge-watched your way through the entire Netflix catalogue.

And the best part? It’s all either FREE or budget-friendly, so fire up the group chat, get your winter woolies on and go exploring around the city!

Perth Observatory Winter Night Tours

Entry: $25 for students
When: 7.30-10pm (check website for dates)

Did you know that the best time for viewing the skies in Australia is during winter? The Perth Observatory is running Winter Night Tours for the whole season to show you a galactically good time. Rug up and take a drive to something a little different that guarantees a hot choccy at the end. And if the weather’s bad, don’t worry – you’ll still get an amazing guided tour of the Observatory.

Cosy At The Quay (June 21 – July 20)

Entry: FREE
When: Fridays 4-11pm, Saturdays 12-9pm

Peel yourself off the couch for [Cosy at the Quay], a winter market in Elizabeth Quay. Through June and July on Fridays from 4, and Saturdays from 12, there will be live music, art + craft markets and food stalls galore. With heated undercover alfresco areas, and top-notch city views, there’s surely no better place for a cheeky beverage and a snack.

Winter Lights at Brookfield Place (July 3-13)

Entry: FREE
When: Every night, 6-11pm

The Brookfield Place precinct in the heart of the Perth CBD is transformed in July, with a chock-a-block program of lighting installations, projections, sculptures and roving performances. With extended hours for all the bars and restaurants in Brookfield Place and additional food trucks coming in, Winter Lights can bring some magic to your boring midweek schedule.

Skating At Elizabeth Quay (June 28 – July 22)

Entry: From $23
When: Monday-Wednesdays 10am-9pm, Thursday-Sundays 10am-10pm

The ice rink at EQ is back for another season! Get a taste of an actual, non-Perth winter by chucking on a pair of skates and hitting the ice, Bambi-style. Not a skater? Chill out (get it) at the Alpine Bar for a drink and some excellent views of other aforementioned Bambis on ice, or give the ice slide a go.

Hidden Treasures Winter Music Series – Fremantle (July 11-20)

Entry: $20
When: Thursday 11th, Thursday 18th & Saturday 20th July from 7pm

Love live music? Explore the tucked-away venues and clubs across Freo and discover your new favourite band with the Hidden Treasures Winter Music Series. $20 gets you entry into 6 venues for the entire night with a stunning lineup of local WA talent.
