Offshore Students Update #2

Geemal Jayawickrama Geemal Jayawickrama

Hi everyone!

What a week it has been. So much has happened over the last few days, but I come to you today bearing some good news.

I have contacted the University regarding the matter of international students, and they let me know that they are currently working with different State Government Ministries and Departments to facilitate the return of international students on campus. According to the University, they are trying to work out what the latest Travel Directives issued by the State Government means, so they can issue a statement to you all soon.

The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science, and Innovation (JTSI) is working with the WA Police to clarify the situation and provide clear guidance to students regarding this matter. Further, the JTSI is trying to get accommodation providers together with the WA Police to work out the whole quarantine process, if the government decides to make an exemption for international students to enter the state. In addition to all this, the Vice-Chancellor continues to work with other Universities and the Ministers to try and get clear decisions.

Last Wednesday Guild Council was able to unanimously pass the motion, which I mentioned in my previous blog post, and the results of it were forwarded to university staff to help make their case even stronger against the government. ISD as part of the Guild has constantly worked with the University over the last couple of days to help them with all the discussions that have been happening behind the scenes. We will keep doing so until we get a positive response from the State Government.

If you do have any questions, you can use askUWA or refer to the FAQs for International Students. If you are not able to find any answers there, please do email me at [email protected] and I will do my very best to get you the answer or point you in the right direction. Good days are around the corner, do not give up hope! The University is working tirelessly to get you all back on campus, and as mentioned above ISD is helping them in whatever way possible. I am sure you will hear from the University very soon or if not over the coming week. Until then, please look after yourself.

Please feel free to send me an email or a message to the ISD social media pages anytime.

Thank you!

Geemal Jayawickrama,
2022 ISD President
